Koroni is a small coastal town in Messinia country, in the Messinian Gulf.
It has about 1,900 inhabitants and is located 52km south-west of Kalamata, while Kyparissia is 90km away. At first glance, visitors see the impressive Venetian Castle, overlooking the town, and the port lying at the foot of the town. The port is almost always "decorated" with sailboats and fishing boats that supply the village taverns with fresh fish and seafood. According to tradition, the name Koroni came from the copper coin Kourouna, which was found during the excavation of the foundations for the castle walls. It is believed that "Koronia" was the original name of the town, after its founder Epimilidis from Koronia of Viotia. The locals, however, had trouble getting used to the name and it was changed to Koroni. The town flourished from the 13th to the 17th century and, along with Methoni, it was a key port for trade to and from the East. Koroni, as well as Methoni, were widely known in the south-eastern Mediterranean as the "eyes of Venice".
